You do this a few times for each boss and every iteration is trickier than the one before so it really forces you to hone your skills thus resulting in a rewarding and challenging formula. Fighting bosses is simple as you merely scale their bodies and move between points as quickly as possible in the hopes of attacking its weak point without taking damage along the way. Meanwhile, the core gameplay loop is easy to understand as you essentially track down a handful of points within a stage and upon destroying them all, the boss will emerge. The fact that you're constantly being pushed forward whether you're dealing with enemies, fighting a boss, or platforming makes Solar Ash an exhilarating experience. □ Have you tried using an oil-based soap? For example, enemies that extend dangerous vines across the ground are best slain by leaping into the air then dashing towards them while homing laser turrets force you to hide behind barriers until you can reach it for a final blow. To make the gameplay feel a bit more varied, you'll face an assortment of regular enemies that can be quite relentless and the trick to beating them is to outsmart them then dispatch them as soon as possible. It's odd that this mechanic is used in both the platforming segments and boss fights as the 2 tend to blend together gameplay-wise but it's a blast nonetheless. Specifically, Solar Ash is a game all about speed as many of its scenarios and bosses require you to reach certain points to extend a timer before the floor becomes lava. Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing because what it does, it does exceptionally well. That being said, they are very different experiences as The Pathless features substantial variety with its stealth-based bosses and Solar Ash well, it's kind of a one-trick pony. Many elements of the design just don’t stand up to my memory of the first game. And it wasn’t just that I was playing on a harder difficulty, either. The dreaded asteroid shooting segment from the first Dead Space that comes dangerously close to ruining the whole game!ĭead Space 2 just doesn’t maintain that feeling of rightness. Everything about it just felt so right – except that asteroid shooter segment – that part blew big time. And the boot stomp! Oh, the boot stomp!ĭead Space hit a gaming sweet spot for me that would be very difficult to improve upon in a sequel. On top of that, every one of the improvised engineering tools that were offered as weapons kicked ass (only, ironically, the military pulse rifle felt weak). The concept of dismembering enemies to kill them was novel and added a unique dynamic to the otherwise stale shooter formula. And the space setting made the clunkiness of the character's movements actually work thematically - even though he still performed better than the characters from Resident Evil 4 and 5 anyway! Other than the artificial gravity, the Ishimura seemed like something you might see on a Science Channel special about hypothetical space mining craft The layout and organization of the ship just made sense, and the use of holographic displays as the game’s HUD and interface was brilliant design. The attention to detail was astounding, and the Ishimura just felt so functional! Like a real spaceship. The first Dead Space game perfectly captured the feel of the classic science fiction horror film Alien, but with a bit more action. In hindsight, GTA IV was probably better. Of course, part of that was because I was actually able to finish Dead Space by the end of the year, and Grand Theft Auto took longer. And Dead Space ended up being my favorite game of that year. I think it was released in the same year as Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4. The first Dead Space really impressed me. So I feel more free to go deeper into the analysis and talk about the tings that I can’t talk about if I’m afraid of ruining a surprise. I don’t feel as much pressure to avoid spoilers because I know everybody who cares enough has already played it. I really like reviewing stuff long after it’s been released. The witch on the moon looks utterly bland, the princess frog looks like clip art, and… actually the main characters look like clip art too. But when you compare it to the C-word, you instantly realize that most of the characters are less imaginative. Ostensibly, Enchanted Portals looks pretty solid, right? The backgrounds are quite vibrant and attractive overall, and it seems like there will be a wide assortment of bosses to combat in co-op battles. From the hand-drawn style to the seeming exclusive emphasis on boss fights, it just screams “derivative.” Take a look for yourself. Put another way, it’s the GoBots to Cuphead‘s Transformers. However, Cuphead does exist, and so Enchanted Portals can’t shake the feeling of being a straight-to-VHS knockoff.
